By the Book: Catching Fire Predictions for Chapter 24

By the Book Chapter 24

I can’t believe it’s time for the Chapter 24 installment of By the Book, where the Mockingjay.net staff predicts what parts of “Catching Fire” will make it from the book and into the film, what scenes we’re afraid might get cut, and what quotes we hope to hear included in the script.

By the Book contains spoilers for Catching Fire, so if you haven’t read the book and don’t want to ruin any surprises, STOP READING RIGHT NOW!

The chapter opens with Katniss running blindly into the jungle, searching for a screaming Prim, just to discover that it’s a jabberjay making the noise. She shoots the bird, then Finnick comes up behind her, but before she can tell him what’s happening, he hears a jabberjay scream and takes off running. Katniss shoots that bird too, then hears Gale’s screams, but she and Finnick try to return to the beach. They are unable to, however, because of a transparent wall, shutting them into that section of the jungle where they have to listen to the screams for an hour. Peeta and Beetee convince Katniss that the sounds the jabberjays were imitating weren’t real, and that Prim and her other loved ones are fine. That night, Katniss and Peeta take the first watch, where they have a heart-to-heart talk and he gives her the locket he’s wearing, which contains pictures of Prim, Mrs. Everdeen, and Gale. Then Peeta and Katniss kiss until Finnick interrupts them.

Chapter 24 is pretty much my favorite chapter out of the entire trilogy. Aside from fangirly reasons (how ’bout that beach scene, eh?), I think the episode is visually dramatic– I think there’s a rawness, a good rawness, to all the scenes that speaks more to the characters’ emotional state than the dialogue itself does. We learn so much about all the characters in this chapter, and that is why I hope it will be (mostly) fully included in the movie; I think this chapter is the heart of the Catching Fire book.

The Jabberjays are a must. We’ve seen Katniss’s desperation to protect Prim, and Jennifer Lawrence’s heart-wrenching take on it was one of the highlights of the first movie, so it will definitely be included. Also, the jabberjays are the reason we learn about Annie and the fact that she’s Finnick’s motivation for participating in the rebellion. This HAS to be included if they want to reveal Finnick as the layered character he is, and from what we’ve heard via Francis Lawrence and Sam Claflin, I think that’s the way they plan on going, so I definitely think this scene will be included.

If this chapter is my favorite chapter out of the entire trilogy, then the invisible force field is possibly my favorite scene. I think it’s such a stunning visual, to have Katniss and Peeta on opposite sides of a transparent wall, desperately wanting to reach out and hold the other, how that is the one thing that can make them feel better, but not being able to. I think it speaks a lot of their desperation to protect each other and that their feelings for each other are real– maybe more than the upcoming beach scene does. Moreover, once the wall comes down and they get to hold each other finally, it’s a chance for us to see Peeta comforting Katniss for once, Peeta being the one who’s emotionally strong when Katniss breaks down, and I think that’s very important for Peeta’s characterization. I’m not feeling very sure that this scene will be included, because I can imagine it being easily circumvented, but I truly hope it IS included, because it’s a very emotional moment. Also, this would be the time to get more insight on Johanna, and why she is the way she is.

And then there’s the beach scene, which OF COURSE has to be included in some way unless Francis Lawrence wants to have a rebellion in his hands. 😉 We know Peeta has the locket, so I think it’s a sure bet that the scene will be included. I don’t know if the dialogue will be exactly as it was in the book, but the “No one really needs me”/”I need you” combo needs to be there. And that kiss. We’re owed a good make-out session, as far as I’m concerned! 😀

Lines I Hope Make It
Johanna: “They can’t hurt me. I’m not like the rest of you. There’s no one left I love.”
Peeta: “No one really needs me.”
Katniss: “I do. I need you.”

I hope the entire jabberjay scene makes it– Prim’s scream, Annie’s scream, Gales’, Mrs. Everdeen’s. That we see Peeta and Johanna trying to break through the invisible wall while Finnick and Katniss collapse on the ground, covering their ears, until the screaming stops and Peeta pulls Katniss into his lap to comfort her. Beetee can explain that it’s not real, Peeta can say how the whole country loves Prim so the Capitol would never harm her, and Johanna adding that there would be an uprising if they did. I’m also hoping for a short explanation of Annie Cresta, so we all know that Finnick is in love.

Then, of course, the beach scene. I don’t care if they dramatically change the dialogue as long as the gist of what they are saying stays the same. And that we get to see the pictures inside the locket. And I hope to all that is holy that they DO NOT cut away to show us Gale’s reaction when Peeta and Katniss start going at it!

Lines I Hope Make It
Finnick: shouting “Annie!” over and over again as he runs into the jungle
Johanna: “Whole country in rebellion? Wouldn’t want anything like that!”
Johanna: “There’s no one left I love.”

I absolutely love Chapter 24 and agree with my fellow staffers on the reasons why – there is just so much here about the characters and the key themes of the trilogy. Thanks to Sam Claflin we already know that the jabberjay scene is included and I think this will be another heartbreaking moment on film, just seeing Katniss’ sheer terror at the thought of something happening to Prim, then that mirrored in Finnick as he frantically searches for Annie before discovering it is another cruel trick by the gamemakers. I think the pair of them crumpled on the ground together is also a nice precursor to Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2 and the strong friendship that Katniss and Finnick develop. I hope that the invisible barrier is included so that the audience knows the others can’t go to their rescue (because if it isn’t, I can see non-book reader movie goers picking that out as a plot flaw for years to come!) and because its also a really touching scene when Peeta comes to carry Katniss and sit with her, reassuring her. I’d also love for Johanna’s lines to make it here, they’re just so telling as to her involvement in the rebellion as well as her character and why she is the way she is. I remember these lines totally sold me on her character the first time I read them and I really hope they appear.

Then there is THE beach scene. I hope that Katniss and Peeta’s conversation is included in its entirety and that it plays out exactly as it does in the book – if the “no one really needs me”/”I do, I need you” lines aren’t included, I’ll be amongst the first to join a pitchforks and torch raid! I’ll also be in a second raid if the make-out scene is tampered with in any way, shape or form – I’m sure I’m not the only one who still feels a bit ripped off after ‘The Hunger Games’ and that cut to Gale.

Lines I Hope Make It
Peeta: “It was a trick Katniss, a horrible one.”
Johanna: “Don’t want that, do they? Whole country in rebellion? Wouldn’t want anything like that!”
Johanna: “They can’t hurt me. I’m not like the rest of you. There’s no one left I love.”
Peeta: “No one really needs me.”
Katniss: “I do, I need you.”

I must say that I LOVE this chapter 😉 The only part I “don’t like” but I think needs to stay in the film is the Jabberjay scenario. I personally am very affected by the voices of the people I love. If I hear the voice of someone I love, in despair, I would go running and not think, just as Katniss and Finnick did. This is where we learn that Finnick is very affected by someone called Annie and that he would do anything for her. Just as Katniss would do fro Prim. And when they get stuck listening to these voices, it almost drives them crazy for that hour. That to me is pure torture. Which brings me to the point that this is also a very touching chapter for me, when Peeta carries Katniss out of the Jabberjay area and just holds her until she feels safe. We all knew Peeta was kind, but this to me really touches my heart.

Then we get to the scene where Peeta and Katniss are on the “Watch” and words start flowing and kisses start happening. That BETTER stay in the movie 🙂 During the the time where Peeta and Katniss are on the watch we also learn who Annie is and why she lost her mind, which gives us as an audience a whole other outlook on Finnick. Finnick loves Annie, the girl who lost her mind. In my opinion, most of this chapter should stay in the film. Maybe not some of the smaller aspects of chapter, but the big events that happen SHOULD stay.

Lines I Hope Make It
Johanna: “Whole Country in Rebellion? Wouldn’t want anything like that?”
Johanna: “They can’t hurt me, there’s no one left I love.”
Johanna: “Let’s each have three and whoever is still alive at breakfast can take a vote on the rest.”
Katniss: “I do, I need you.”

Just three more chapters to go!
