By the Book: Catching Fire Predictions for Chapter 27

By the Book Chapter 27

I cannot believe that the World Premiere of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is TOMORROW!

Very, very soon we all will know for certain what parts of “Catching Fire” will have made it from the book and into the film, what scenes got cut, and which of our favorite quotes were included in the script.

We at Mockingjay.net would like to thank all of you for sticking through us through this 27-part editorial. It’s been incredibly fun to make these predictions, and we have loved hearing you share all of your predictions with us, too. You guys truly are the most amazing readers anyone has ever had!

There are SPOILERS BELOW, so you haven’t read the book and want to still be surprised, you should STOP READING NOW!

After the arena explodes, a hovercraft claw descends out of the sky and picks up Katniss. After waking up several times and pulling out IVs and struggling against restraints, Katniss finally wakes up and finds herself in a room with an unconscious Beetee. She grabs a syringe to use as a weapon, and leaves the room until she hears Plutarch and Finnick talking with Haymitch in another room. She bursts in, and Haymitch makes her drop the syringe before Plutarch explains how he masterminded not just the arena, but their escape to join the rebellion in District 13. When Katniss finally understands that Peeta is a prisoner of the Capitol, she attacks Haymitch and is sedated again. When she wakes up, Gale is there and tells her that he helped her mother and sister escape from District 12 once the capitol started bombing it. He tells her that there is no longer a District 12.

Since most of this chapter was fuzzy and full of introspection for Katniss, I assume most of it will be cut. I don’t think they’ll show her bit with the syringe, and Plutarch/Haymitch/Finnick explaining things to her could get a little too exposition-y and slow for the end of the movie; I’m sure they’ll include SOME kind of explanation (they can’t leave their non-book-reading audience completely confused for a year), but I think they’ll make it short and to the point, sort of like Haymitch’s conversation with Katniss at the end of the first movie. Finnick being frantic over Annie, I think we might just see that in passing, in the background. Likewise, Katniss trying to claw at Haymitch was one of my favorite parts of the book, but I don’t think it’ll be included in the movie; at the most, I think she will scream at him, maybe lunge for him, but won’t actually get to inflict physical damage. Most likely, I think we’ll just see her devastation at Peeta being captured, rather than anger.

There are two things I REALLY want to see from this chapter, though, and that’s the reveal of Plutarch being on their side (I hope they make it a little less anti-climactic than it was in the book, because I think it deserves a “gasp!” moment), and of course… the cliffhanger about District 12. I really, really wish we can SEE the destruction of the district (or at least the fire left by it) instead of just taking Gale’s word for it, I think that would make the moment even more dramatic, and… that’s what movies are supposed to do, right? Make the emotions visual. If they show us Twelve burning, I guarantee the cloud of despair will hang over the audience as the credits roll, and at this point in the series, that is precisely the kind of reaction you WANT to get. Please, Francis Lawrence?

I can’t believe this is our last BTB for Catching Fire! It feels like it went by so fast now. But hey, that only means the movie is finally upon us, and I CAN’T WAIT! I’m sure it’s going to be amazing. Thanks for always reading and for offering so many insightful comments. Hopefully we’ll be bringing this feature back for Mockingjay! =)

There are two moments that are essential from this chapter, the exposition of the full scale rebellion including District 13 and Gale’s death-blow line at the end. I’m sure we’ll see the arena crumble in spectacular fashion. We know so much more of the budget has been pumped in to the special effects department and I could almost guarantee it won’t end with a whimper but with a bang. A gigantic bang! I’m thinking we’ll cut to Katniss waking up with Haymitch already beside her. As much as I love the terrifying prospect of being in the Capitol’s hands after the destruction of the arena, I think we’ll get right to the explanation with Haymitch and Plutarch for pacing reasons. I dearly hope Katniss and Haymitch’s fight is included. It’s such an opportunity to let Lawrence and Harrelson’s talent shine, we know they can both play anguish with incredible skill. It would be a real gut wrench to know Peeta is in a horrific situation, coupled with Katniss blaming Haymitch for this (and him blaming himself) and the knowledge that there is nothing they can do to save him. I love the relationship between Katniss and Haymitch, for their similarities and their understanding of each other. So I really hope the film reaches the conclusion with the two of them.

I also really want Katniss to feel that her and Peeta were used as pieces. It’s a theme that runs through all the books and I pray it’s included here. I used to think we’d see Gale saving citizens of District 12 but now I’m not so sure. If we’re lucky we might get a quick glimpse of him running from the firebombs to the safety of the woods. One thing is for sure: one of the great moments of Catching Fire was the cliffhanger ending. And we need to hear that from Gale… I want to join everyone else and thank you so much for reading our By The Book editorials, we’ve loved all of your comments and opinions and I feel so lucky to have shared the lead up to the adaptation with all of you fine people! Enjoy the movie! 🙂

I’m looking forward to seeing the epicness of the arena explosion CGI, and the horror of the Capitol hovercraft appearing above Katniss, it’s long claw extending down to extract her from the arena. And Plutarch waiting for her onboard, his motives still unclear, as she loses consciousness. I’m not sure that we’ll know how much time has past in the hovercraft. Maybe Katniss will be wheeled into a recovery room with Beetee, and then get up as soon as she’s left alone. It would be great if the syringe part is included, but I’m not convinced something that small will be included during the climax. I hope we see her listening outside the door to Plutarch and Finnick talking, and then see her burst into the room when she hears Haymitch’s voice. I am about 100% convinced that instead of saying “Done knocking yourself out, sweetheart?” that he’ll say “Good morning, sweetheart” because that is the title of the final track on the Catching Fire soundtrack.

And then I want Plutarch’s explanation of what happened, and the shock of realizing that not only has he been manipulating the games, but he’s been setting things in motion to whisk them away to the rebellion headquarters in District 13. I want her confused and stunned as everything is revealed, but then I want to see her shoot up out of her seat and strike Haymitch in the face as soon as she learns that Peeta has been captured by the Capitol. And then she is sedated and arrives in District 13, where we see Gale. I was hoping we’d see the bombing and escape from District 12, but the more I think about it, the more I believe it would take away from the climax of the arena exploding and Katniss discovering the rebellion’s plans. If nothing else in the entire movie, though, I want the very last thing we hear before the screen fades to black to be “There is no District Twelve.”

Thanks again for sticking with us– enjoy the movie!

I can’t believe we’ve arrived at the final chapter of Catching Fire! Before I start I would like to thank everyone who has shared their comments and theories alongside ours, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this series and I can’t wait to find out if we got any bits right! I’ve said before that I’m very interested to see how the ending plays out after the arena explodes. I would really like to see what’s happening in District 12, as the escape from District 12 would be harrowing and really set the stage for the beginning of Mockingjay Part 1. I’m pretty confident much of the chapter will be untouched in terms of Haymitch, Plutarch, and Finnick narrating what has happened, though I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a location switch from a hovercraft to actually being in District 13. I don’t think much time will pass before Katniss wakes to find Haymitch and co, though I don’t think she will be holding a syringe but rather take a fleeting look at Beetee before stumbling off.

I have no doubt that the narration of the rebellion plan and the arena’s final moments will be very emotionally charged as they build up to the all important question – where’s Peeta? This part of Catching Fire just broke my heart as Katniss and Haymitch both lash out at each other. It takes time for Katniss to realize that Peeta means something to Haymitch too but I hope it is apparent to the audience here. This chapter also starts to show more layers to Finnick’s character and after hearing Francis Lawrence talk about portraying these I can’t wait to see what Sam does with the ending as Finnick tells Katniss they’d all be better off dead. And then there’s Gale. I’m pretty confident that the film will end with Gale telling Katniss there is no District Twelve, it was the perfect cliffhanger ending to the book and I think it would also make a very fitting end to the film. Thankfully, there’s less than two weeks until we find out!

Well, here we are at the final chapter with just over a week to go for the movie to come out! OMG! YAY! LOL! Now I can move on with how I feel about this chapter and what I think will stay in the film and what I feel wont stay in the film. To start off, most of this chapter is of Katniss in bed, not really coherent. However the one time she does get up is one of the thing’s I would love to see in the film. Well that and the scene with the very last line in the book of course. Lets start with her getting up and stumbling down the narrow hallway with a needle in hand, ready to fight. I would love to be able to see her coming upon the door where she can overhear the three talking. Finnick, Haymitch and Plutarch, that to me would be a good lead into how we learn what has happened to Peeta and Johanna. Plus I would love to see Katniss lunge over the table and scratch Haymith. I also want to see the scene where she opens her eyes while she is in the bed and Gale is standing there. I feel like this HAS to be in the book because of the last line in the book. AND this is how she learns that her Mom and Prim are OK and alive! It’s a very short chapter but a meaningful one at the same time!
