Actress Amandla Stenberg, who played Rue in the first Hunger Games movie, had a chat with pal Tavi Gevinson when they both sat down with Dazed and Confused magazine. Their chat will be appearing in the February issue. Amandla is currently starring in FOX’s Sleepy Hollow as Macey, the wheelchair-bound daughter of the town’s sheriff.
Even though she first auditioned for the role several years ago, she still looks back at the role in awe. “I intentionally pursued The Hunger Games. I’d read the book and realized, ‘Wow, this is a young African-American girl who has a really powerful story,’ so I was emailing my agents non-stop, trying to get into the audition room. Even now I have moments where I’m like, ‘Whoa, I got to be in The Hunger Games, that’s insane.”
When asked about whether she’s ever regretted anything online, she had a very profound response. “I think the internet forces you to be okay with your mistakes, and the things you’ve done in the past, especially when you’re in the media. Personally, that helps me to stop self-editing or being self-conscious, and instead realize that my previous mistakes have allowed me to grow.”
