Synopsis:

Chapter 3 continues to paint the bleak picture that is life in District 13. The chapter begins with a restless Katniss, unable to sleep following the events of the day. She finds herself holding Peeta’s gift to her in the arena, the pearl, before Prim wakes to comfort her. Katniss marvels at how grown up Prim now is, as Prim suggests Katniss could make any demands she wants, including Peeta’s safety, as a condition of becoming the Mockingjay. In the morning Katniss joins Gale at their assigned table for breakfast before heading to Command to outline her conditions. Arguing ensues as all agreements are made, the major sticking points being the safety and immunity of the tributes held in the Capitol and how Katniss and Peeta’s onscreen romance will continue. Afterwards Katniss is left in the hands of Plutarch and Fulvia who natter over the finer details and present her with Cinna’s sketch book. The chapter ends on a rather grim note as Katniss is taken to the depths of District 13 and discovers her prep team shackled in a cell.

This chapter has a lot of dialogue, so I’m expecting them to cut some out. I’m hoping they’ll keep Katniss and Prim’s conversation, especially because it sort of takes us back to the morning of the 74th reaping. I think the ‘little duck’ line should be kept, and maybe Prim could sing ‘Deep in the Meadow’ to Katniss. It would be really sweet, and it would probably comfort Katniss and have the roles from the first movie reversed. I believe it would be important to talk about the Mockingjay conditions that Katniss will ask for, and it would show that Katniss still cares and worries about Peeta.

I’m not sure they’ll show the schedule thing as much as in the book, but I think we’ll see them eat for a while. The whole Katniss-Gale conversation about hunting might be there, but maybe they’ll cut it and just show Katniss asking for it. It would be great to see him giving her some food, like he does in the novel. The public announcement during which Katniss confirms that she will be the Mockingjay will surely be included, and I can’t wait to see it!

I’m expecting to see Plutarch show Cinna’s sketchbook to Katniss, and to explain the propos to her. I hope we see I’m still betting on you written in the book. I want them to go down and then see Katniss’ prep team, but I’m not sure if they’ll stick with them being all beaten up or if they’ll just be there, chained, with the guards nearby.

Lines I hope make it:

“I should wake you up more often, little duck.” –Katniss

“Just one more thing. I kill Snow.” –Katniss

Willow Shields did such an amazing job with her scene in the snow in Catching Fire so I’m really looking forward to the conversation between Prim and Katniss from this chapter. CF set the precedent in terms of how she is growing and is also involved in the rebellion effort and I like the role reversal of Prim being the supportive one and helping Katniss to realise how much power she holds. This moment also gives Katniss the resolve she needs to face Coin and the other rebel leaders in Command. I think breakfast will make the cut as it also helps to show how bleak and regimented life in D13 is, as well as showing how Katniss relies on Gale’s support. Gale sneaking Katniss some extra turnips would be a nice touch here but I’m not confident it will be included.

This chapter also holds the first real face-off between Katniss and President Coin and I’m sure it won’t fail to disappoint! I hope that they discuss Katniss and Peeta’s show-mance for the rebellion effort, resulting in a reaction from Katniss, who still hasn’t acknowledged her feelings are real. The most important moment after delivering her decision though is the sketch book. I’m sure Fulvia’s role has been merged with Cressida’s, so I expect her to be present with Plutarch and hand over the book. It would also make a really nice touch if the camera moved over the words “I’m still betting on you” as Katniss flips through the sketches. Then of course there’s the move to the dungeons and the discovery of Katniss’ prep team, who have been cruelly starved, stripped and shackled to the walls. This is another example of Coin’s cruelty, putting her in the same company as Snow, and must be included. I want them to depart from the books in this scene (only here though!) as I have my fingers crossed that they find Effie Trinket in the cell with the prep team.

Lines I hope make it:

“I should wake you up more often, little duck.” – Katniss

“They’ll be granted immunity!” – Katniss

I tend to be very hack-happy when it comes to this series of editorials (I’m probably the last person you’d want to be adapting your favorite book into a film, haha), and this chapter is one of those that feels like a lot of exposition to me. I think the only part that will make it onto the film virtually intact is the scene where Katniss presents Coin with her list of demands in order to be the Mockingjay. Everything else, I feel can be excluded or at least reworked some other way, or in some other part of the movie.

Katniss taking out the pearl Peeta gave her has to be included somehow, because it goes to show her state of mind and how much she misses Peeta. However, that’s a detail that can be included virtually anywhere. I don’t think the idea of facing Coin with a list of demands will come from Prim; if that scene is included for the sake of showing the relationship between the sisters, I think they might have Prim suggest that Katniss ask Coin, but leaving out the weight of how important Katniss is to the rebel machinery. I feel that bit of exposition would come better from someone in the rebellion– it could be a chance to give Gale more focus, show that he really wanted Katniss to become the Mockingjay all along, without necessarily cluing him in that what she wants to demand from Coin is Peeta’s immunity.

Like I said before, I think the meeting with Coin will be kept similar to the book, for the most part. Maybe they’ll shave off a couple of demands; I keep thinking the Buttercup thing will be a non-issue and they’ll just have us assume there was never any problem with her bringing in her pet. I do hope they keep the line where Coin asks if she now wants Gale presented as her lover, because that part gave me chills when I read it, and I’m sure Jennifer Lawrence’s expression will say volumes of Katniss’ utter horror at their callousness. It’s a great way to show that District 13 and the Capitol really aren’t that different.

Cinna’s sketchbook will be included very briefly; I can see Plutarch showing it to Katniss and expanding on the details of her uniform while Katniss tunes him out and runs her hand through Cinna’s signature on the sketches. It could be an emotional moment, without having her say anything. I don’t think we’ll see the Prep Team imprisoned. We know (thanks, Nelson Ascencio!) that they’ll be in the movie, but I think they’ll just be brought to Katniss with a stray line letting the audience know that D13 got them out for her.

Lines I hope make it:

“Do you want him presented as your new lover?” – Coin

“They’ll be granted immunity!” – Katniss

I love this chapter of Mockingjay because it presents readers with Katniss’ realization that Prim has grown up. It’s always easy for her to assume that Prim is the little girl at her first Reaping, but we never really get to see the internal changes Prim goes through while watching Katniss in the Games at home in District 12, likely in school surrounded by her peers and at home with their silent and unhelpful mother. With Katniss gone, I’ve always imagined that despite Gale’s help, Prim had to grow up extremely fast in the short time Katniss was gone. I definitely think we’ll get to see the night time scene between the two sisters and I hope the pearl makes it into the scene as well. I feel like it wouldn’t have been in Catching Fire if it wasn’t going to reappear in Mockingjay.

Everyone knows I’m a fictional foodie, so I hope we get to see Gale plops some mashed turnips onto Katniss’ tray, but it’s a minor thing so if it doesn’t I won’t be too sad. I’m a little confused at how they’ll handle the meeting where Katniss agrees to do what they want, since Coin is a commander, not the president. Perhaps she’s Commander of District 13 though? We’ve seen set photos of Katniss and Gale outside, so we know that she makes her hunting demand. I don’t necessarily think Katniss will have a paper list in front of her, they’ll want to build suspense over her list of demands, which I don’t think will include Buttercup since it’s unnecessary for a film.

I definitely hope they’ll include Coin’s flippant way of referring to Katniss and Gale as a couple, as the way they built up that tension between the two in Catching Fire would make for great background for a doubly awkward scene in the opening scenes of Mockingjay. I guess one question here is whether there will be a Fulvia or if Cressida has just replaced her. I wouldn’t mind that, to be honest. It would make sense. Cinna’s sketchbook has to be in, or I might just throw a fit. I mean I get it if they don’t want people to see her outfit ahead of time, but come on. Cinna!

And on that note, since we’ve heard Nelson filmed scenes for Mockingjay, I’m going to assume he’s held captive in 13 with Octavia. The BIG question is whether or not Effie Trinket is there or if she’s in the Capitol with Peeta. She may end up just being rescued along with Peeta.

Lines I hope make it:

“That’s her! Right there. With the costume, gunfire in the background, just a hint of smoke.” — Fulvia (probably said by Cressida)

“Just one more thing. I kill Snow.” –Katniss
