The very first song from the Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 has now officially been released! Written and performed by Lorde, who also functions as the curator for the album, the song premiered today on the KROQ radio station. When asked about the song and how she got into Katniss’ head to write it, she commented:

“Basically I wrote the song specifically for the movie, it wasn’t something that I had a draft of previously. I reread the books, and I just wanted to tap into everything that Katniss is feeling in that film and what’s the crazy stuff that goes on. One of the things that happened in the book which to me felt like this crazy turning point was her best friend Peeta tries to kill her, he’s been brainwashed and tries to strangle her. It just felt like something so irreparable and something that the characters couldn’t turn back from. I felt like Katniss was like ‘okay, I’m taking names. I’m coming for blood. You don’t do these types of things to my friends and family and get away with it.’ I just wanted to make something kind of dark and haunting.”

“It’s weird because everything that the character could think or feel is already kind of laid out for you in the book. You can’t take that many leaps, it becomes your song and not their song so it was definitely about keeping in that mindset and just thinking about ‘What would Katniss do?,’ but she’s such an awesome character to write for and it was such an awesome experience. There couldn’t have been a better character for me to write from the perspective of.”

Here are the lyrics, thanks to @MoreLorde on Twitter with some modifications by our staff:

I’m a princess cut from marble, smoother than a storm
And the scars that mark my body, they’re silver and gold
My blood is a flood of rubies, precious stones
It keeps my veins hot, the fire’s found a home in me
I move through town, I’m quiet like a fire
And my necklace is of rope, I tie it and untie it
And now people talk to me but nothing ever hits home
People talk to me, and all the voices just burn holes

I’m going in hot

This is the start of how it all ends
They used to shout my name, now they whisper it
I’m speeding up and this is the
Red, orange, yellow flicker beat
Sparking up my heart

We’re at the start
The colors disappear
I never watch the stars, there’s so much down here
So I just try, keep up with them
Red, orange, yellow flicker beat
Sparking up my heart

I dream of you, but they’re not the sweet kind
And the shivers move down my shoulder blades in double time
And now people talk to me, I’m slipping out of reach now
People talk to me, and all their faces blur
But I got my fingers laced together and I made a little prison
And I’m locking up everyone who ever laid a finger on me

I’m going in hot

This is the start of how it all ends
They used to shout my name, now they whisper it
I’m speeding up and this is the
Red, orange, yellow flicker beat
Sparking up my heart

We’re at the start
The colors disappear
I never watch the stars, there’s so much down here
So I just try, keep up with them
Red, orange, yellow flicker beat
Sparking up my heart

And this is the
Red, orange, yellow flicker beat
Sparking up my heart

And this is the
Red, orange, yellow flicker beat, beat, beat, beat

Do you like the song? Definitely sounds like Katniss, don’t you think? Are you excited to hear the rest of the album? Be sure to comment and tell us what you think!
