The always measured, thoughtful and honest Donald Sutherland spoke to Collider about his time as President Snow in The Hunger Games films. He says he is unlikely to remember a specific moment on set due to his age but is proud to have been in each film and to work with Jennifer Lawrence:
“I enjoyed each one of them. Each one of them [were] explicit and precise and intimate and… truly delicious. Working with her, working with Jennifer, working with the genuius that is that actress, is a very joyful experience; discovering truth with her.”
He is asked about his process on set and how similar he works to the way Jennifer works. He calls Francis Lawrence “wonderful” and describes the entire journey as truthful. He says no one was looking for gimmicks to satisfy an audience or a test screening but were entirely focused on the truth of the characters at the heart of the story. My favourite part is when he explains that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 is devoid of the saccharine and doesn’t manipulate an audience in to telling them how they should feel and how they should think; it’s all about the work.
