Through the Pages: Mockingjay Chapter 4

Time for another installment of Through the Pages! Join in as we breakdown Mockingjay before the arrival of ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1″ with our predictions on what will make it to the big screen and what will be left behind on the cutting room floor. Don’t forget to comment with your own predictions so that we can come back and examine who got what right or wrong!

Spoiler warning! Through the Pages involves a lot of book discussion, so if you haven’t yet read Mockingjay then proceed with caution. Or, better yet, go read the book and come back and join in!

Katniss makes the shocking discovery of her prep teams state as she finds them shackled to a wall by District 13 security. Flavius, Octavia, and Venia were caught sneaking bread from the cafeteria and were thus “confined” until Plutarch led Katniss down there to surprise her with their being in District 13. Cinna had requested the team be extracted from the Capitol to assist Katniss into her transformation as the Mockingjay. Katniss takes this as a warning from President Coin and Gale questions her sympathy for them as they hunt for meat out in the woods during their training time.

Prim wakes Katniss for Reflection time before the assembly and Coin’s announcement. At the last minute, Katniss makes sure that Coin includes Annie Cresta in her list of pardons, but this minor victory is marred when Coin inserts a stipulation of her own: any deviation on Katniss’ part will result in the immunity agreements being void.

I think this chapter might only end up being a few minutes long with a heavy emphasis in the Gale and Katniss scene. I suspect that Effie will be added into this scene with Flavius and Octavia and that Effie will be the “strong one” and given Venia’s lines. While I hope they show just how horrible the conditions are the prep team have been kept in to show just how horrific D13 can be I suspect it may be pushed along for pacing and go from a rather long scene pared down to briefly showing the room and finding Effie, Flavius and Octavia to Katniss taking them to her mother with Plutarch, Gale and Katniss discussing how disposable everyone is and how it’s a warning followed by her mother reporting “no permanent physical injuries” then skipping along to show Katniss and Gale outside to hunt and have their conversation where Gale thinks Coin is doing her a favour. I believe they’ll keep Finnick a little “off” as well as Coin announcing the immunity for Peeta, Johanna and Annie so long as Katniss devotes herself to the cause.

Lines I hope make it:
“Cinna wanted this?” – by a fierce Katniss
“In return for the unprecedented request, Soldier Everdeen has promised to devote herself to our cause. It follows that any deviance from her mission, in either word or deed, will be viewed as a beak in this agreement. The immunity would be terminated and the fate of the four victors determined by the law of District Thirteen. As would her own. Thank you.” – President Coin

So chapter 4 on the surface has more going on under the surface that the movie will have to emphasize.  Katniss comments seeing her prep team in such bad condition was nothing new, but “the realization that this sort of thing goes on in 13 as well” was too much for her to swallow.  Mockingjay: Part 1 will have to be conscious of making us never quite fully trust D13 or Coin. In the end Katniss kills Coin, so Coin has to earn her death.

Also we see Gale’s doubting why Katniss has sympathy for her prep team. Gale has a good head on his shoulders, and I know where he is coming from. However the prep team are not the ones to blame, the Capitol itself is. This is yet another example of setting up the idea that Gale is willing to do anything to bring harm to the Capitol, even if it means disregarding the safety of others. So I feel like we will begin to see the wedge between Gale and Katniss’ relationship be driven in over how Katniss doesn’t want to answer injustice with injustice.

Katniss and Gale’s short hunting expedition will be a great breather in the film, a time to think about what is going on. I’m hoping MJ:P1 will have more of those moments since CF couldn’t afford to stop and let you process. But having Katniss and Gale hunting together reminds us of the former lifestyle they have lost. It let’s us be sentimental for a moment and hope: maybe things can eventually be restored and not be completely lost.

The last big moment in chapter 4 is the public speech Coin makes granting immunity to Peeta, Johanna, Enobaria, and Annie, which will be a great opportunity to show the power struggle between Coin and Katniss as well as showing Coin can’t be fully trusted. She agrees to Katniss’ terms just so long as Katniss, as The Mockingjay, does exactly as she is told. As Katniss says, “…I step out of line and we’re all dead.”

I’m intrigued to see how District 13 sets up government functions and public speeches. I’m wondering if they will draw similarities between the captiol, and maybe that will leave us a bad taste in our mouthes that makes us question and think, “something’s not quite right here in 13.”

Lines I hope make it:
“But what would happen if you got on Coin’s bad side? My prep team was kidnapped. They can at least hope to one day reurn to the Capitol. Gale and I can live in the woods. But you? Where would you two run?”- Katniss

Given that I’ve already stated last time that I don’t think the prep team being held captive is going to make it in, I think a large part of the beginning of this chapter is going to be cut. I’d like it if they still include the theme of Katniss’ argument with Plutarch and Fulvia (yet another character who will most likely get cut from the narrative), because it shows how Katniss’ world has gone from one extreme to another: from the unrepentant excess of the Capitol to the overtly strict micromanaging of District Thirteen, and Katniss longing for a less oppressive middle point. I think they could still have the conversation in there somewhere, maybe with Messalla or Cressida instead of Fulvia. Katniss could maybe ask what’s going to happen to Effie (if they’re going to get her out of the Capitol, for example, if it hasn’t happened at that point), leading to the idea of who is disposable for the rebellion and who isn’t. It would be one scene for Philip Seymour Hoffman to stand out on.

And I say I hope that argument is included somehow, because it directly leads to Katniss’ fight with Gale, which I feel must be in because it’s one of the first signs we see that Katniss and Gale really aren’t on the same page after all, and I think it’s necessary foreshadowing. Especially if they really go the Effie way, considering she was the embodiment of the Hunger Games in Twelve and it’s already been established since the first movie how much contempt Gale harbors for the entire institution. I think it would be a good way of “continuing” that conversation he and Katniss had before the first reaping.

Annie’s name will probably be included without Finnick having to ask. Coin’s announcement will definitely be included. They’re not going to miss that opportunity to make her sound chilling and manipulative.

Lines I hope make it:
“Of course you are. The tributes were necessary to the Games, too. Until they weren’t. And then we were very disposable–right, Plutarch?” -Katniss

While I previously said that I think Effie would take the place of the prep team, our podcast interview with Nelson Ascencio (Flavius) told us that the did indeed film scenes for Mockingjay and if it’s not to be held captive in District 13, I’m not sure what else he could be in. I think it’ll be Flavius, Octavia, and Effie being held captive, though the biggest change we’ll see will definitely be in Effie. I don’t know that they’ll be as mistreated as they were in the book. We’ve seen photos of Katniss and Gale outside, so we know they do hunt, though it could possibly have been photos from the propo filming later too, since Jennifer did have her head resting on Gale’s shoulder.

I don’t think the film has to go that far. I think the late addition of Annie won’t be included as it’s a fairly minor detail and can be added into the list of names in the previous meeting. I definitely think Coin will stick her little addendum in, but I expect they’ll play it up to be more dramatic in the film somehow. I’ve honestly always had a hard time imagining why the victors would be seen as traitors just because they weren’t rescued from the Arena with Katniss, Beetee, and Finnick, so I hope they “fix” this and make it more obvious as to why a pardon is necessary. It’s one of the weaker parts of Mockingjay I’ve never really fully bought into.

I think this chapter will keep the prep team (mostly Flavius and Octavia since the others weren’t much in the movies) in District 13 but I don’t believe Effie will be there just yet. I guess maybe they could add her, but I personally wouldn’t. In my opinion, Effie will have a more ‘rebel’ role in Mockingjay, and by that I mean that she’s likely to appear near Peeta’s rescue. Since Katniss isn’t there for the rescue in the book and assuming she will not be in the movie either, I’d love if Katniss actually wasn’t aware of Effie’s fate while we, the audience, would. Of course the assembly will be included, but I feel like they won’t name specific people such as Annie and just go with the remaining tributes. I’m pretty confident we’ll have the hunting scene with Katniss and Gale as well, because those two hunting together is very iconic.
